Drip. Drip. Drip. It’s that annoying dripping sound that keeps you up at night. But, it’s more than an irritant and a nuisance. Leaky faucets and running toilets in our homes waste an enormous amount of water and steals from family budgets each month. The amount of waste is shocking and should embarrass us.
The United States Geological Survey projects a single dripping faucet can waste 5 gallons of water a day! That’s over 2,000 gallons a year. Plus, that increases your water bill over $240 a year for a single leaky faucet. A fast drip, leaky shower head, and a running toilet add even more to the total. And, if it’s a hot water valve, it’ll cost even more in wasted heated water. It’s avoidable wastefulness.
The average American household uses approximately 400 gallons of water per day. It is projected 10% of that is completely wasted by leaking faucets and running toilets.
Why It Happens.
There are few things more annoying than a leaky faucet or running toilet. It’s not your fault. It’s nothing you’ve done that’s caused parts to wear out. Mechanical parts age and need replacement in order to maintain proper function. Slow leaks happen due to wear and tear, loose fittings, worn O-ring, or something as simple as a worn-out washer. Some leaks are easily fixed.
As you check your home for leaks, don’t forget the water heater, your clothes washer, any washtub, and exposed piping. Any and all may be the culprit.
What You Can Do.
Fixing leaky faucets, showers, and running toilets are not always difficult. Sometimes you may be able to fix it yourself with a simple tightening a loose nut or fitting. By watching a YouTube video demonstration, you can make some of these repairs yourself. Be sure to identify which of the four kinds of faucets you may encounter – compression, ball type, cartridge, or ceramic disk. Each relies on different parts, O-rings, neoprene seals, and components that wear out and need replacement over time.
While there are many jokes about running toilets, the impact on water bills is no laughing matter. The typical running toilet wastes 200 gallons of water a day. That’s an incredible amount of water being flushed into your sewer system. And, in most cases, fixing it requires nothing more than a replacement toilet flapper or adjustment to the flapper’s chain. Something you can do yourself following a visit to the hardware store.
If the leak is not corrected after your attempts, it’s probably time to call Flader Plumbing to complete the repair. Certified technicians from Flader Plumbing can also inspect all exposed piping within your home for potential weak areas that merit repair. You’ll see the impact on your water bills the next month. It’s amazing! Be proactive.
