Protect Your Family from Lead in Drinking Water
Water that leaves a water treatment plant does not contain lead. However, through corrosion, lead can leach into water and flow from your faucet. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that homes built before 1986 are more likely to have lead in the plumbing system.
The sources of this contamination include corrosion in the service line connecting your home to the city’s water main along with corrosion in plumbing within the home. Leaching from these two sources can result in lead reaching the water flowing from your faucets.
The Dangers of Lead.
Lead can impact almost every organ and system in your body. Exposure to high lead levels can severely impair mental function and cause damage to the kidneys. Pregnant/nursing women and children under the age of six are most vulnerable.

Is Your Home at Risk?
The City of Evanston has already replaced much of the lead piping in water mains and piping to the residential service valve. However, it is estimated that over 10,000 private homes still have water service flowing through lead pipes.
City Partnering with Homeowners
In order to eliminate lead piping into residences, homeowners can participate in the City’s Lead Service Line Replacement Program. To qualify, the homeowner must first contract with a certified plumber to replace the part of the line that is the homeowner’s responsibility – from the service valve in the parkway into the home. Payment to the certified plumber is the responsibility of the homeowner. Upon notifying the City that this work has been completed, the City will replace the line from the service valve to the water main at no extra charge.
To ease the financial burden on the homeowner, the City of Evanston offers an interest-free loan program where the loan is repaid with monthly charges as part of the homeowner’s water bill. Complete details are available online at www.cityofevanston.org. . It’s easy. It’s partnering.
